When it comes to choosing a fragrance, olfactory notes are an essential element to consider.
In this blog post, we’ll explore how to distinguish and choose olfactory notes according to your tastes and mood.
Perfumes are made up of three types of olfactory notes: top notes, middle notes and base notes, which are represented in the form of a pyramid called the olfactory pyramid. At the top are the top notes, in the center the heart notes, at the base the base notes.
Top notes
These are the first notes smelled when a fragrance is applied.
They are often light and fresh, and usually last from 15 to 30 minutes.
Top notes are important because they give the first impression of the fragrance. Common top notes are citrus, herbs, spices and fruits. These are the most volatile.
Heart notes
The heart notes are the notes that take over from the top notes.
They are often considered the “body” of the fragrance.
Heart notes can last up to two hours after application, and are often floral or fruity.
The most common heart notes are rose, jasmine, lily of the valley and peach.
Base notes
Base notes are the notes that remain after the top and heart notes have disappeared, supporting the heart notes like the foundations of a house.
They can last up to 24 hours after application, and are often rich and deep.

How to choose fragrance notes to suit your tastes
Choosing a fragrance is a personal decision that often reflects our tastes, personality, the mood of the moment, the season or our lifestyle.
Perfumes are often classified into seven olfactory families.
Here are a few suggestions for associating olfactory families with women’s personal tastes.
🍊The citrus family is ideal for active, dynamic women. Citrus notes like mandarin, lemon or bergamot are refreshing and stimulating, perfect for sporty, energetic women.
🌸 Romantic, feminine women will appreciate the floral family. Floral fragrances, often associated with notes of roses, jasmine or lily of the valley, are delicate and romantic, reflecting gentleness and sensitivity.
🌿 For sophisticated, elegant women, the chypre family is ideal. Earthy, woody notes, such as patchouli or oakmoss, create a refined, elegant atmosphere.
🌲 Women who prefer warm, sensual and comfortable fragrances will appreciate woody notes. Notes of sandalwood, cedar and vetiver create a warm, comforting ambience.
🌶️ For sensual, daring women, the oriental family is the best option. Spicy notes of vanilla, cinnamon or musk create a sensual, exotic ambience, reflecting a bold personality.
🌿 Aromatic fragrances are perfect for dynamic, fresh women. Notes of fresh herbs like basil, rosemary or mint create an energizing, invigorating ambience, ideal for active, dynamic women.
🍂 Finally, for women looking for a versatile, unisex fragrance, the fougère family is the best option. Notes of lavender, oakmoss and patchouli create a fresh, woody fragrance, perfect for all occasions.
The Rose et Marius workshops!

We offer a number of custom perfume creation workshops:
- The workshop to create your own perfume for scented tiles. You’ll be able to create your own fragrance and leave with a scented tile that you can use to perfume your car, suitcase, wardrobe…This takes place on the second floor of the Rose et Marius bastide, right in the heart of downtown Aix-en-Provence. We’ll introduce you to 14 fragrances, then you’ll learn how to compose your own scented creation for your home that you can use to perfume a tile. Ideal for scenting your car, wardrobe, cupboards, suitcase…
- 1h30 during which you’ll learn how to create your own oil-based home fragrance diffuser. We’ll introduce you to 14 fragrances, then teach you how to create your own olfactory imprint for your home. Bonus: your diffuser is refillable: we keep your ‘recipe’ so you can recreate it in the same way once it’s finished. Workshop for children and adults.
- The workshop to create your own eau de parfum measures 75 ml. We’ll introduce you to 18 fragrances, then teach you how to create your own refillable eau de parfum.
- During the workshop to create your bespoke eau de parfum, we use a quiz to determine your olfactory profile. We’ll introduce you to 18 Haute Parfumerie materials to help you choose your fragrance base, then put your perfume in a refillable crystal bottle mouth-blown in France with an old-fashioned pump.
- Your eau de parfum is refillable! We keep the recipe of your creation so that we can make it again on request, and ship it to you in France or abroad.
- The creation workshop lasts 1h30. It is available by appointment in French and English, on the second floor of our Aix boutique.
- On the program: presentation and explanation of the different olfactory families in perfumery, discovery of 14 aromatic compositions from Haute Parfumerie, creation of your own perfume accord, creation of your own oil-based home fragrance, bottle personalization (ribbon and cement tile motif).
- At the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with your very own customized 200ml home fragrance bottle (retail price 69€). The scented diffuser is ideal for perfuming offices, bedrooms and living rooms. Your diffuser is refillable! We keep the recipe of your creation so that we can make it again on request and ship it to you in France or abroad.
- The workshop is also available for children! Something to keep them busy all summer long!
And your perfume is refillable!
Like most Rose et Marius collections, your creation will be refillable.
At the end of the workshop, we keep your recipe so that we can remake and send you your perfume refill, so that your custom perfume creation can last over time. For as long as you like, we can remake your custom eau de parfum or your personalized home fragrance diffuser. All you need to do is send us an e-mail or call us, and we can reproduce your perfume creation over and over again.
